Four-skill intensive courses provide one year's worth of language instruction.

Summer Intensive Arabic Level 1 is an eight-week course designed to introduce complete novices to the fundamentals of Arabic in the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). Classes are small and use the Alif Baa' and al-Kitaab textbook (2nd edition), supplemented by authentic materials both to learn the language and to experience the culture. Cultural proficiency is an integral part of the language instruction (forms of address, youth phrases, phrases used among intimate friends,etc.). Students will spend 4-5 hours per day practicing using Arabic in classroom activities, and should plan on studying an additional 3-4 hours most afternoons and evenings. In addition to class time, a full day trip to an Arab neighborhood in Chicago provides an opportunity to use Arabic in an authentic cultural context. Cultural exposure will also be supplemented through guest speakers, songs, and films. At the conclusion of the course, students can expect to have mastered the sounds and shapes of the Arabic alphabet, to be able to speak about themselves and their world in Modern Standard Arabic, as well as to engage in conversations about familiar topics with native speakers,  to comprehend basic texts, and to use some common phrases in colloquial Egyptian and Shaami.

This course will include a lunch break from 12:00-1:30pm. All students participating Summer ARAB 10123 will participate in a four-skills proficiency assessment as the final exam for the course. Students will receive University of Chicago certification describing their language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, based on the results of the proficiency assessment.

The class will help students develop their ability to initiate and sustain discussion on topics of general interest and to present information and simple narratives in Modern Standard Arabic; to understand a wide range of written genres in Arabic, including formal writing, journalistic texts, and less formal styles; to write and speak with increasing accuracy and fluency; and to carry out basic research with non-technical texts.

Summer Intensive Arabic Level 2 is designed for students who have completed the equivalent of Alif Baa' and al-Kitaab Part One. This course includes a lunch break from 12:00-1:30pm. For Summer 2020, those receiving the MA Scholarship will have final out-of-pocket tuition costs of $3,000 for 300-unit intensives and $1,500 for 100-unit reading courses. For information about additional aid through your department, contact your Dean of Students office.

There is no application for the MA Scholarship; all current and entering MA students in the MAPH, MAPSS, CIR, CMES, and CLAS programs will receive the scholarship upon enrollment.

All students must file official withdrawal requests with the Summer Language Institute via email if they decide not to attend. Verbally informing an instructor that you are withdrawing or failing to attend classes does not constitute an official withdrawal. Students are still responsible for tuition and all other charges if they have not officially withdrawn. Approval of any withdrawal, including the date on which the withdrawal takes effect, must be certified by the Summer Language Institute.

  • Students dropping a Summer Language Institute course are eligible for a 100% tuition refund through the second day of a class. For courses dropped after the second day of class, refund amounts will decrease according to the schedule below.
  • All days refer to the class meeting days and not calendar days. For example, the second day of class for a class that meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays would be the Wednesday of the first week.
  • Drop requests must be submitted by the end of business on the day the student wishes to drop: e.g., a student wishing to drop and receive a 100% tuition refund must submit the drop request no later than 5pm CDT on the second day of class.

Students requesting drops by email to the Summer Language Institute before 5:00pm on the following days of a course will receive tuition refunds in the amounts below:

  • 2nd day: 100% refund
  • 4th day: 65% refund
  • 5th day: 50% refund
  • 8th day: 30% refund
  • 9th day and after: No refund, “W” appears on transcript

Due to COVID-19, no on campus housing will be available in Summer 2020.

On-campus housing for visiting students is available.

  • Pre-college students: Housing and dining packages for residential pre-college students are $800 per week. Pre-college students reside in the Campus North Residential Commons building along with other pre-college students.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students: Housing and dining packages for undergraduate and graduate students (over 18 year of age) start at $700 per week (double occupancy). Undergraduate and graduate students reside in an on-campus residence hall along with other adult students over 18 years of age.

Residential students are supervised by Residential Assistants, and are welcome to join all residential activities, events, and excursions organized by the Summer Session residential staff.

To request housing:

  • Visiting Undergraduates and Pre-college Students should submit your housing request as part of the Summer Session application.
  • Current UChicago students can request summer housing through Summer Conferences directly.

What are your admissions requirements?

The Summer Language Institute reviews applicants' academic records to ensure that they are prepared for the demands of intensive summer courses. In some cases, we may request that applicants complete a placement test or submit supplemental documentation to demonstrate their preparation for a specific class. Applications which include a financial aid application will not receive an admissions decision until after the review of all financial aid applications.

Are auditors permitted in the courses?

Auditing and "sitting in" are not permitted in any SLI courses. All participants must be officially registered.

Do you accept international students for the SLI?

Yes. International students are welcome to apply. All courses for 2020 are online, so no visa is required. For Summer 2021 and forward, when courses will run on campus, the UChicago Office of International Affairs can assist in processing visa paperwork for F-1 student status. In order to meet visa requirements, students must be enrolled full time. All of our intensive 300-unit classes qualify for full-time status. Reading & Research courses, unfortunately, do not qualify. International students who also need to apply for a US visa should submit their application materials no later than 老王 2.2.8.

International students who are currently studying at a US institution and who will return to their home schools in the fall do not require any special visa processing.

Do you offer classes in English as a Second Language?

At this time, we are not able to offer ESL courses during the summer. There are several other ESL options in the Chicago area, including the University of Illinois-Chicago, DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, and Purdue University-Calumet.

What if I have to miss class?

Since in-class speaking and listening practice is an essential component of language learning, we expect that all students attend class regularly. Our summer courses move very quickly, and you will fall behind if you are not in class. If it is absolutely necessary for you to miss class, you should inform your instructor(s) as far in advance as possible to make arrangements for completing homework.
